This research aims to gain understanding of the health behavior of individuals affected with a genetic disease, Friedreich Ataxia in Lebanon and comprehend the consequences of the lack of awareness and circulation of information about FA on those individuals in comparison with international communication efforts through the Health Belief Model theory. The research method used throughout this thesis is qualitative and interviews with sixteen Lebanese participants afflicted with FA aged between 11 to 49 years old were conducted relying on an interview guide that tested seven constructs of the ...

The same latent problem faces almost all developing countries. This problem is how to develop the society of the country. Before 1990, and for years, economists, politicians and development planners have charged year-to-year progress or decline within a country, by measuring average per capita income. So, clearly, before 1990 and for years development of a society was viewed as the development and growth of the capital resources of the economy, often by neglecting the human dimensions in that society, Current views regarding development, have changed. It is thought that the development of a ...

The term spatial data signifies all geometric objects of different dimensions and the relations that could bind these objects together. Spatial data is, in general, divided into two parts: crisp spatial data and vague spatial data. Crisp spatial data has determinate coordinates and boundaries, whereas vague spatial data has indeterminate ones. The demand for spatial data support in database management systems is growing every day, yet not all commercial products provide spatial data support natively, and those that do merely provide it partially. Since database management systems are at the heart ...

The purpose of this thesis is to design and test a device that measures the electrical parameter sofa certain material. This device can have different applications, like assisting in land mines detection, agricultural or construction purposes. In order to measure the electrical parameters, this device or probe uses two wideband planar dipole antennas that operate in the frequency range between 3 and 6 GHz. The transmitted signal between the antennas, (S21), is measured and then compared to a database obtained by simulating different materials using the Finite Difference Time Domain Method. Based ...

Cloud computing ecosystem is one of the trends currently being discussed in the domain of information technology and computing. Computing ecosystem allows smart usage of technology which means unneeded resources are saved such as power, computing resources, spaces for datacenters as well as saving huge amount of CO2 and electric circuit boards and machines. Cloud federation and its underlying techniques, is considered role model in sharing and expanding cloud business to provide better and cheaper services for end-users. In this thesis, we will survey and compare existing Identity Access Management ...

Exoplanets are planets orbiting stars other than our Sun. During their motion around their star, due to gravitational effects, and due to the planet’s thermal and reflective radiation, small variations in the lightcurve could be detected (Esteves et al. 2015). Phasecurves are small-scale variations in planetary flux that arise from an exoplanet’s motion around its host star. If detected, the phasecurve can lead to determining the planet’s mass, its albedo, and it can give us an idea about its atmosphere. In this work we aim to detect these variations in the data from the K2 mission. To do this we ...

Background: Olive Oil (00) is premium oil which plays an important part of the Mediterranean cuisine due to its nutritional and sensory characteristics. Studies highlight the nutritional benefits associated with the consumption of 00 including the low level of saturated fatty acids (SFA), the high level of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and the moderate level of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) along with minor constituents including phenolic compounds. Studies highlight the importance of phenolic compounds as they are the major bioactive of 00 which contribute to its sensory, organoleptic ...

Background -- Olive oil (OO) has been widely known as a main source of lipid in the Mediterranean diet. Over the years, the interest in virgin olive oil (VOO) consumption boosted due to its sensory properties characterized by its unique taste, flavor and color; and its health properties exerted by its monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), tocopherols, and phenolic compounds. Phenols are minor compounds with antioxidant capacities that contribute positively to OO shelf life and stability to oxidation. Literature data have shown that several agro-industrial factors including harvesting time, ...

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the variables affecting house prices in Lebanon in the long run and the short run. Design/ Methodology/ Approach: To answer the above question, data collected is a monthly one covering second half of the year 2013 until February 2021. The dependent variable is average housing price, while independent variables include employment index, construction permits, non-resident deposits, interest rate, CPI, and coincident indicators. The autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model is applied for the long run and the error correction model (ECM) is ...

Purpose - This paper aims at investigating the factors determining the dividend payout policy in the Lebanese banks listed on the Beirut Stock Exchange. Methodology - To achieve this objective, this study considers the impact of seven variables, namely, profitability, liquidity, leverage, firm size, growth, firm risk and previous year's dividend payout on the dividend payout ratios by using an unbalanced panel dataset of audited financial statement of listed banks between the years of 2005 and 2011. Two models were tested and seven hypotheses were investigated using the OLS and the dynamic ...

Introduction: according to the global report on drug use, the prevalence of people who use drugs (PWUD) and hence require treatment are estimated to be more than a quarter of a billion worldwide. Malnutrition is highly prevalent among PWUD and hyperphagia is also present in the early phases of treatment. Objective: this study aimed to assess the association between weight gain amongst PWUD currently undergoing treatment for recovery whether in the rehabilitation centers or the opioid substitution therapy (OST) program centers in Lebanon. Methods: this was a cross-sectional study, where demographics ...

The exchange rate peg in an open market economy allows the flow of large amounts of money and helps market participants to take advantage of arbitrage opportunities between domestic and international interest rates. Pegging disconnects the interest rate from real economic conditions of the underlining assets. This is the case of Lebanon, where national banks find a greater return on investment in the risk-adjusted return on government bonds. The main finding in this thesis is that the high level of deposits at commercial banks correlates directly with the level of the Lebanon national debt. ...

Thyme herbs constitute a major part of the Mediterranean diet and are gaining worldwide popularity. However, their chemical contamination with toxic metals may put consumers at a health risk. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the incidence of Arsenic (As), Cadmium (Cd), Lead (Pb) and Mercury (Hg) in thyme herbs and thyme-containing products. For this, 180 samples pooled into 36 composite samples of the most consumed types of thyme-containing products and thyme herbs were collected twice at three-month intervals. Samples were analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) ...

Purpose: With the rapid increase in respiratory illnesses and pollution, face masks such as clothe masks, N95 masks, and surgical masks are becoming increasingly more common in everyday life. The recent SARS-CoV-2 outbreak has led to the exponential worldwide use of these masks in everyday activities. However, little is known about the effects of these masks on maximal oxygen consumption during exhaustive exercise. Methods: 11 Athletic individuals and 7 recreational individuals were recruited and took part in the 20 m shuttle run test, also known as the “beep test”, while wearing surgical masks ...
