This research project deals with foreign direct investment (FDI) trying to identify its antecedents and its consequences. The project starts by a historical review and an examination of past studies to situate the study better. A rather new statistical technique (Recursive System) was used to try and find the statistically significant variables affecting FDI. The researcher reached interesting results in his study by finding that political stability and government incentives together affect positively FDI and both of them affect economic performance independently and via FDI.

Lebanon, the second smallest state in the Middle East, has been influenced by numerous foreign interventions, of which most significant are those by, regional and global powers, the French Republic and the United States of America. Beyond their direct military presence in the past, both the US and France have been constantly accused of meddling in Lebanon’s internal affairs. In the past few years, the United States had been regularly imposing sanctions on Lebanese companies and individuals, whereas, more recently still, France was becoming directly involved in the Lebanese political crisis. ...

The research paper aims to translate the first three chapters of the novel entitled Khirbet Masood and written by the contemporary novelist, Professor Mansour Eid (1944-2013), from Arabic to English. The translation process attempts to bridge both the Arabic and the English versions by rendering typically the same meaning knowing that the writer’s writing style is the “apparent ease” “السهل الممتنع” which is clear and flowing; nevertheless, it is inimitable. Moreover, this paper tackles the various difficulties the translator encountered during the translation process; these difficulties include ...

Data Fragmentation is a heuristic problem in the design of a distributed database. Its purpose is to maximize the locality of reference, minimize data access at remote site, and to decrease the number of disk accesses in the system. In this thesis, we review the design a homogeneous distributed database. As the design is a heuristic problem, we also review a number of algorithms suggested as solutions to the three types of fragmentation: vertical, horizontal or mixed. Next, we propose that a previously implemented routine entitled "a transaction-based vertical partitioning algorithm" can be ...

This study explores the representation of women in Nadine Labaki’s films: Caramel (2007), Where Do We Go Now (2011), and Capernaum (2018). It examines the three films via Laura Mulvey’s theory of the male gaze and analyzes the position that the female occupies in the narrative structure and their treatment within the cinematic discourse. This thesis aims at proving that although Nadine Labaki is often referred to by critics as a feminist filmmaker dealing with women’s issues, obsessions, concerns, and difficulties, as they face patriarchal society, her image, form, narration, and ...

In this study, the role Lebanese television stations generally play in influencing the public opinion by using their promotion department as a tool to inject certain fears and concerns to the public, in favor of their agendas, is to be explored. This paper will specifically study the promos that Future Television produced in 2006, for the first memorial of late prime minister Rafik Hariri, asking the people to participate in a huge gathering; a shout out then against the Syrian regime and all its Lebanese supporters. Such promos and television spots are deliberately produced to influence the ...

This thesis studies the implications of introducing the public sector domination in what it used to be a private sector business. It is related to the mobile technology in Lebanon which shifted from a former prosperous management to an operator on the Lebanese government's payroll. Comparing the previous Cellis era to the new Alfa epoch revealed that the former days were much better in terms of management. With all the outside interference and the relation to Syrian officials, the Lebanese GSM sector was in state of outmost glory and technological advancements compared to its worldwide ...

It is important to understand stellar evolution as well as the chemical composition and structure of the Galactic disk, in which B stars in open clusters play a major role as they are of the most massive and brightest objects in these clusters. The fundamental atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g) of the B stars in the Alpha Persei open cluster (190pc, 50Myrs) have been determined using the Stromgren uvby-β photometric system, with a calibration technique by Napiwotzki et al. (1993)[65]. The method is based on fitting spectral lines of fundamental stars to synthetic spectra based on Kurucz ...

The twenty-first century cyberspace offers unprecedented opportunities for prosperity and development, but also a series of new and evolving threats to international peace, security, and human rights. For some years now, there have been sustained efforts from civil society groups across the world to harness the Internet for human rights causes. However, by publicizing human rights abuses in near-real time to mass audiences, the new uses of digital technologies may also challenge the legitimacy of the international legal order itself, especially if states are not able to action their legal ...

Fuzzy measure theory is a generalization of classical measure theory. It was first introduced by Lotfi Zadeh in 1965 in his famous paper ”Fuzzy Sets”. After more than 50 years of the existence and development of classical measure theory, mathematicians felt that the additivity property is, in some applications, too restrictive. It is also unrealistic under real and physical conditions where measurement errors are unavoidable. According to Sugeno, fuzzy measures are obtained by replacing the additivity condition of classical measures with weaker conditions of monotonicity and continuity. Chapter ...

The origin of mathematical matrices lies with the study of systems of simultaneous linear equations. Today, they are used not simply for solving systems of simultaneous linear equations, but also for describing the quantum mechanics of atomic structure, and even for designing computer game graphics. Matrices are very useful due to the fact that they can be easily manipulated. We use the notation A-1 to denote the inverse of a matrix A. One of the major uses of inverses is to solve a system of linear equations. You can write a system in matrix form as AX=B, then X=A-1B. Inverses are also used in ...

Durability is a term that has widely affected the design industry in general and the graphic design industry in particular over the last decade. It has given the design profession in general a problem-solving aspect and a fundamental role in creating and promoting more responsible design solutions. In the graphic field, a logo design plays a partial but important role in the communication of an identity: A logo is for “identification” of a business or product in its simplest form. Case studies show that logo design is not durable. It is periodically re-designed, as an attempt to update the ...
