This thesis examined the influence of ‘goodvertising’ campaigns on Lebanese students’ attitudes towards a social issue, specifically women’s empowerment. Goodvertising is a relatively new advertising approach that many brands across the world have started using in their marketing strategies. Studying its influence on individuals can aid in understanding its effectiveness. Although many studies (Amos, Holmes, & Strutton, 2008; Buizjen & Valkenburg, 2003; Deighton, Henderson, & Neslin, 1994; Edquist, Horberry, Hosking, & Johnston, 2011) have been done on the effectiveness of traditional advertisements, ...

Climate change is without any doubt the most critical environmental issue of the twenty first century (Orsato, 2009). Buildings have a huge environmental impact: they generate GHG emissions, consume energy, water, and raw materials. Managers of firms working in the building sector take important decisions by choosing whether to build green or not. The thesis aims to study the effect of firms’ resources and capabilities (R&C) on managers’ environmental perceptions. Also, the effect of these variables on the environmental pro-activeness of firm managers is examined. The study model, designed by ...

This research intends to uncover the relationship between learning environments and pupils’ academic outcome. What difference would the qualities of light and air make in the actual academic ambiance and in the process of transforming incoming students into active learners? With theoretical foundation, the research proceeds to look at the integration of green principles of design inside classrooms and their effects on pupils’ achievement. What do students really need? According to recent pedagogy research, some of these needs mainly are comfortable thermal and visual conditions, and healthy ...

Nowadays, the whole world is facing a global climate change due to GHG emissions. Transportation is the second source of air pollution in the world. This thesis is treating the green consumerism within the automotive industry. Specifically, it assesses the factors that influence the willingness of consumers in Lebanon to buy a "green" car in an attempt to reduce air pollution and therefore climate change. This study is an environmental economic study in that it uses a Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) and assesses Willingness to Pay (WTP) of consumers for environmental protection. In addition, ...

Purpose – this paper aims to understand how familiar the Lebanese are with environmentally friendly FMCG and explore the major factors affecting behavior towards these products. In addition to understanding who the Lebanese green conscious consumer is. Ultimately, to have a distinctive study available in Lebanon as a reference for future studies. Design/methodology/approach – this research is mainly confirmatory since it is based on a previous research; however it has an explanatory aspect as well since there were no similar studies published in Lebanon. A deductive approach is used since ...

Green synthesis of metallic nanoparticles has accumulated an ultimate interest over the last decade due to their distinctive properties that make them applicable in various fields of science and technology. Metal nanoparticles that are synthesized by using plants have emerged as nontoxic and ecofriendly. In the current study, the optimal reaction condition for the synthesis of zero valent iron nanoparticles using Malva extract was developed. For the first time, aqueous extract of Malva parviflora was used as a sustainable source of reducing and capping agents to synthesize zero valent iron ...

The aim of this study is to explore how Facebook’s platform is used in the grieving practices in Lebanon. In addition, it is supposed to reveal whether or not it soothes the five stages of grief, introduced by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross(1997): 1) Denial, 2) Anger, 3) Bargaining, 4) Depression, and 5) Acceptance, by incorporating the support of others. Results will show if a Lebanese virtual grieving outlet on Facebook is actually present and effective. Using variables such as feelings, the five stages of grief and gratification of human needs, two methods of research were used for this study, qualitative ...

Solar Chimney (SC) is a passive design used to enhance natural ventilation and space conditioning in a building, limiting the energy requirement of the building to low operational costs. In Lebanon, high energy consumption of residential buildings is recorded mainly for heating and cooling, marking the highest consumption in the Western Mid Mountain (WMM) climatic zone. Thus, proposing the SC application for limiting this high thermal demand in residential buildings of the WMM zone for both heating and cooling would limit the total energy consumption. SC design has various types (Stand-alone SC ...

The purpose of this was to illustrate the aspects of Facebook, which contribute into the effects on academic performance and socialization habits of Lebanese tweens. In order to achieve this objective three research questions and two related hypothesis were measured. (1) Does long hours on Facebook reflect negative effects among adolescents? (2) What are the various effects of Facebook on adolescents spending increased amount of time on this social networking website? (3) Is there a correlation between the academic performance of adolescents and the time spent on Facebook? The related hypothesis ...

Marine observatories based on sensor networks provide continuous ocean monitoring. The design phase of such systems, which is part of the complete development life cycle, is a complex and challenging task. The design difficulties may induce the designers to make architectural design errors during the design phase. This study aims to identify the best design approach that helps sensor networks designers in preventing errors and validating models at an early phase. In addition, it introduces a new environmental constraint that should be taken into consideration when building design models. To ...

Using framing theory, this study will examine how the United States (U.S.) government uses film as propaganda to justify its successful encroachment of Iraq and Afghanistan. After the U.S.’s failure to achieve its goals in Iraq and Afghanistan, it has been using the film medium to frame the images of the U.S. soldiers and represent them as patriotic and sacrificial, while distorting the image of both Iraqis and Afghanis. The propaganda film has always been used as a tool for mass manipulation by many nations, among them the U.S.. The films American Sniper, The Hurt Locker and Lone Survivor portray ...

The paper presents the study of the iterations of rational fractions, that is, the behavior of z_0,z_1=f(z_0 ),…,z_(n+1)=f(z_n ),… We illustrate the conditions needed for this function to behave as its linear part and prove the existence of Siegel and Cremer points. The study extends to a description of Fatou and Julia sets.

The internet is once again suffering from its own success. Since 1995, there has been a massive increase in demand for internet services, resulting in an exponential growth of the Internet. We have entered now an era where the users of the Internet are unable to obtain the bandwidth needed to support their applications, and they are experiencing high packet loss. Packet loss problem arises whenever the number of packets arriving at a given router is much higher than its buffering space. The main goal of this thesis is to find adaptive schemes capable of optimizing the communication network ...

A denial of service (DoS) attack is an attempt by a person or a group of persons to cripple an online service. This can have serious consequences on companies like Amazon and eBay, which rely on their online availability to do business. Many defense mechanisms have been proposed to thwart DoS attacks. One of these defense mechanisms is called hop-count filtering. Although an attacker can forge any field in the IP header, he or she cannot falsify the number of hops an IP packet takes to reach its destination. This hop-count information can be inferred from the time-to-live value in the IP header. ...

Globalization has had a significant impact on all businesses and industries including construction. It reduced distance and time between all points of the world in near real-time which stimulated international projects. Lebanon as well as the Arab Gulf, have always had a culturally mixed societies and always experienced cultural differences due to many reasons. Working with people from different cultures can present a unique set of problems and challenges. The concept of Cultural Intelligence (CQ) looks at the ability of effectively adapting to different cultures. On the surface, it would seem ...
