The main and overarching objective of this research endeavor is to devise data-driven soft modeling tools that can provide fast, fairly accurate and computationally efficient predictions for: (1) the thermal conductivity of particulate composites (PC), and (2) the level of shielding provided by a porous structure from a high-yield explosion. The computational tools developed in this work constitute cheaper and faster alternatives to the relatively large and cumbersome numerical simulations or experimental testing campaigns that would otherwise be needed to make predictions of comparable ...

The prediction of crystal size distribution from a continuous crystallizer at steady state is important for the simulation, operation and design of crystallizers. In this research, we consider integrodifferential population balance equations (PBE) describing the crystal size distribution for a crystallizer with random growth dispersion and particle agglomeration. We first develop numerical schemes to solve the initial value problem after we establish the well-posedeness of this problem. We then test the performance of these schemes on examples with known solutions. The numerical results from ...

Web services are form of middleware to exchange information between systems over a network. With the advent of the age of mobile devices and their diversity, the importance of web services became all the more apparent. Every web service grants certain functionality and can utilize other web services to gain more functionality and more robustness. Such a service that combines the functionality of other services is called a composite service and the process of designing such a service is called a composition. This thesis studies an on-the-fly algorithm that efficiently checks for the possibility ...

Social media has played a key role in the rise of extremism. Extremists took advantage of these open and free platforms to promote their propaganda. At the same time, this was an opportunity for governments, religious institutions and civil society to create counter extremism narrative. Based on the framing theory, this study examines the way in which Sawab, Al-Azhar Observatory, and Taadudiya Facebook pages present their narratives, with the aim of developing characteristics for each of the narratives. This study adopts a quantitative research methodology through the content analysis of ...

This chapter discusses the processes and outcomes of utilizing Open Educational Resources (OER) in Lebanon for addressing five challenges that represent barriers to incorporating 21st Century Competencies (21st CC) and aspects of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 (SDGs) in the curriculum. It draws on the experience of the UNESCO-OER Chair for Access and Success housed at Notre Dame University-Louaize (NDU). The work promoting Open Pedagogy (OP) enabled OER in Lebanon a priori. The OER activities set to address Lebanon’s educational problems are aligned with the Recommendation on OER ...

The term operational risk became widespread in the late 1990s when central bank representatives of twelve countries formed a working committee; the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS). The BCBS defines operational risk as the risk of loss resulting from inadequate or failed internal processes, people and systems or from external events. This research aims to model operational risk data using the Loss Distribution Approach under BCBS requirements. Simulated data was used consisting of 3,192 operational loss events between the years 2009 and 2018. The implementation of the LDA was ...

This study examines the relationship between capital structure and financial performance in the UK market by using FTSE 350 companies. The hypothesis tested is whether there is a significant relationship between capital structure and companies' performance. The null hypothesis (Ho) stated that there is no relationship between capital structure and firms' performance. The methodological approach taken was a sample of 129 companies from FTSE 350 compromising top UK companies. These companies were analyzed to find a relationship between the capital structure and financial performance. Data relating ...

Internet Multicast service extends the Internet point-to-point unicast delivery to a multi-point delivery. Multicasting means that a datagram is sent to multiple sites at more or less the same time. To support real-time multimedia, the minimization of delay without loosing the reliability of the network is required. To achieve this goal, we have proposed to change the architecture of a multicast one-stage network to a multicast hierarchical two-stage network. We have proved that by giving additional functionalities (such as back-up and error correction) to the intermediate sites (i.e. mrouters) ...

Construction industries may play a critical role in dominant energy usage as pressure mounts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Energy efficiency investments can be a profitable way to reduce carbon emissions. Solar buildings with Net-Zero Energy are emerging as a promising way for reducing buildings' environmental impact. In Lebanon, there is a transition from vernacular to modern architecture in the early twentieth century. It is tightly related to the implementation of concrete in construction and the formation of the national cement industry, which paved the way for the creation of ...

The main objective of this work is to find a more straightforward method for estimating the parameters of an equally spaced discrete autoregressive process by using maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) considering it is challenging to obtain the parameters of a nonlinear optimization procedure. The resulting estimated values are tested through simulation and then compared with those obtained using the previous MLE and Yule-Walker estimation. The achieved result yields slightly increased accuracy. Another problem we tackle is the Yule-Walker estimators for the continuous autoregressive models ...
