Place is a word that speaks for itself - a concept both simple and complicated that allows the cultural elite to savour city's life. We can see many manifestations of a certain place; it is what we call "place of memory", where participating in certain activities expresses the spirit of such places. Place and memory intersect together so that every place has a memory, and each memory is related within a place. Memory and its representations touch very significantly upon questions of identity, nationalism, power and authority. This is what Tim Cresswell (2004) discussed fully in his introduction ...

It is evident that home is not an object, a building, but a diffuse and complex condition that integrates memories and images, desires and fears, the past and the present. This thesis focuses on ornamental motifs especially the wheat motif that is unique and that is mostly found in the Bekaa. Each country or region has a local motif that individuals have used to decorate their dwellings. Due to the sparse knowledge concerning local ornamental motifs in Lebanon and the Bekaa specifically and the globalization of design and pattern there has been a serious decline in the use of local motifs and ...

The term ‘Serious Games’ was coined to reflect the dual nature of games that exceeds entertainment purposes to provide some kind of educational value. Alternative terms have been used such as ‘Game-based Learning’ and ‘Gamification’. Educational children game apps in the Arab world are abundant, most of which are language learning apps. There seems to be an almost non-existent presence to the game apps that provide cultural context to the children beyond learning languages. In this thesis, we present a conceptual framework to gamifying Lebanese culture. We describe the process of gamification, ...

Eating out of home is becoming more prevalent. The consumption habit, though traditional, is also related to the modernization and transformation of society. Nowadays, it is essential when examining eating out to consider not only the food but also the space and the situation under which consumption takes place. With the growing number of restaurants and competition in the market, the demand for more sophisticated, stimulating, and ambience-rich settings is also increasing. Multiple factors starting from the name, the food served, the service, the price, the atmosphere, and the physical ...

In a country of a population of over four million, Lebanon is home to roughly 200,000 or more domestic workers who migrate to work as live-in maids from across Asia and Africa. According to human rights organizations, a large number of housemaids are suffering from human trafficking, and some aspects of their living conditions remind us of slavery (Fernandez, 2015). In this Master project, the objective is to study the visual and conceptual tools mobilized by artists and designers in order to make visible and discernable aspects of human servitude in the Lebanese housemaids’ context. Design and ...

Starting with an interest taken in the immersive quality of images, this thesis looks at immersive visuals, a set of formal aspects that instigate a sensation of spatial presence in the audience. In particular, it focuses on a contemporary visual effect found in mainstream cinema dubbed “movie-ride” effect. Although the literature shows the historical importance of immersive images, it falls short of thoroughly discussing the “movie-ride” effect and its immersive qualities. To that end, this thesis presents a technical and thematic reading of said effect, to a purpose of reading it as an immersive ...

Technology is altering human communication and their lifestyle. It helped in spreading information and made it more focused for serving human needs. This technological revolution was known as the “information age” which had a dramatic impact on our culture, in terms of making life much easier. The digital revolution changed a lot in the ways we communicate and we interact. Living in the digital age, people are being exposed to a brand-new power; the digital power. Social media gives the opportunity to bring politics closer to people and creates an atmosphere that is incredibly informative and ...

Solar Chimney (SC) is a passive design used to enhance natural ventilation and space conditioning in a building, limiting the energy requirement of the building to low operational costs. In Lebanon, high energy consumption of residential buildings is recorded mainly for heating and cooling, marking the highest consumption in the Western Mid Mountain (WMM) climatic zone. Thus, proposing the SC application for limiting this high thermal demand in residential buildings of the WMM zone for both heating and cooling would limit the total energy consumption. SC design has various types (Stand-alone SC ...

Lebanon is undergoing a critical economic crisis due to many internal and external factors. This crisis that started in 2015 is showcased clearly in the housing construction sector amplified by the decision of the Central Bank to suspend all subsidized housing loans in 2018. This resulted in an aggravated situation for young couples and low-income households who were heavily relying on these banking facilities. As part of the global strategy to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission, affordable sustainable housing is highlighted as a major aspect for providing the low-income ...

The emergence of respiratory diseases and pandemics through history such as the severe acute respiratory disease (SARS), the Spanish flu, and the current Covid-19 epidemic highlight the importance of ventilation in the transmission of airborne diseases. This research examines the buildings in Lebanon converted for hosting the cases of the Covid-19, focusing on the three pillars of sustainability which are the economic-social and environmental. This pandemic is affecting all the countries in the world, and concerns have risen about future epidemics that can cause the death of the population. In ...

This research project aims to study the effect of glazed balconies on energy consumed on cooling, balcony typologies, and adjacent spaces. The research focuses on the case of seafronts and specifically Saida’s coastal zone: “Corniche El Baher” area. Glazed balconies are a spontaneous chaotic trend that allows users to benefit from and occupy balcony spaces in all seasons. This trend has many impacts on the indoor thermal comfort and energy consumed in the glazed spaces. Drawing upon previous energy consumption research, particularly in the summer months in residential buildings in Lebanon and ...

In the high mountains of Lebanon, internal comfort heavily relies on fuel consumption for indoor space heating. Being a country that lacks natural resources such as fuel and gas, the energy sector in Lebanon had been unable to meet the market demand for a long time. The simple solution that was adopted to compensate for the electricity shortage over the past years was to rely on private generators for power supply. This solution urged additional energy costs for heating and cooling demands through the inefficient use of air cooling and heating, and since cooling and heating depend primarily on ...

With the increase in the urban world population, the need for sustainable cities has become crucial, and comfortable and livable open spaces are an important aspect for this purpose. However, since open spaces are affected by the urban design of an area, their quality depends on the priorities of the stakeholders and decision makers, and thus might be compromised to the advantage of other needs, such as prioritizing profit over the public good. The thesis addresses comfort in open spaces, specifically within waterfront developments because many growing cities are coastal and thus, have witnessed ...
  • Kobersi, Lydia (Notre Dame University-Louaize, 2021)
The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic caused by highly contagious respiratory diseases brought about unprecedented crises across the world, and a housing crisis among others. Lebanon in particular, which is the context of this study, was heavily impacted by the pandemic, exacerbated by a pre-existing refugee crisis and by the Beirut Port explosion. This study aims to research the characteristics of an emergency shelter that mitigates the spread of contagious respiratory diseases in Lebanese urban areas as the latter are hubs of infectious diseases. In this context, the study researches the characteristics ...

I have been practicing modern singing for five years, pondering the enhancement of my interpretation by applying the techniques I have learned in my classical singing training sessions. My five years of vocal ‘Bel Canto’ lessons allowed my voice to develop and prosper in opera singing. My interest was how and when to use these techniques in modern singing for a better performance and to encourage other singers to consider this essay and to profit from its benefits. The research on the subject encouraged me to develop a master’s thesis. Therefore, the first chapter is devoted to a general ...

[MOTIVATION] Throughout history, art and aesthetics have been a fundamental part of human life. Our ancestors carved their life stories in caves, and temples, whereas in our postmodern society, individuals have become detached from art and began observing rather than understanding its aesthetic reactions. Art reflects life occurrences, believes and fantasies. This study will tackle the following questions: To which extent can art generate erotic fantasies and aesthetics on canvas? Which notions and techniques in erotic abstract painting may be used to project, and visualize aesthetics of one’s ...

In his writings, Wadia Sabra (1876-1952) announced the creation of a “Universal Scale” and a “New Unit of Interval Measurement”. However, it is noteworthy that this particular work lacks precise information related to its numbers. This study aims to reconstruct and reveal the related numbers and tables, by researching Wadia Sabra’s archive. Also, this study reviews the acoustical and musical characteristics of this particular work of Sabra, its validity, and its possible new input to the musical field.

Public schools guarantee education that is invariably available to pupils, even to those who have financial difficulties. Being easily accessible, attending such schools has remained high until today; in 2019, US public institutions educated over 50.8 million scholars, to which the national average number of pupil per public school was about 526 scholars (Brian D. Ray, 2021). Conversely, public schools in Lebanon do not enclose such high number of students due to their unsatisfactory reputation: most of these schools are in bad conditions, outdated, and have limited classroom resources. Also, ...

For the past 30 years, Lebanon has been struggling with housing. Specifically, Beirut’s housing sector faces social, economic, and environmental challenges with the unavailability of adequate housing, unaffordability of prices and lack of energy security. Being one of the oldest in Lebanon, Beirut’s residential stock requires maintenance at the envelope level to bring it up to current energy standards. This thesis focuses on the roofs of the existing stock as they are vulnerable fifth facades, subjected to a Mediterranean climate with 300 sunny days per year, precipitation, and hot and humid ...

Design excellence seeks architectural solutions that respect historic buildings and sites. Marj Besri dam project is one of the many proposed projects addressing the ongoing water availability problem, in Lebanon. On the one hand, finite resources and high cost restrict the potential of the no-dam alternative for water management such as rainwater harvesting, waste water reuse and groundwater storage (Council for Development and Reconstruction, 2014). On the other hand, several studies focus on the impact of the dam project on the excessive greenhouse gas emissions in the early stages of the ...
