The effects of e-games on children’s communications skills or social interactions as seen by their mothers has been rarely researched and investigated due to the novelty of the subject. Violence in games was the leader in research over the last few decades, until the invention of touchscreens. Many theories were discussed in order to describe the relationship between children and touchscreens (the Social Learning Theory, the Catharsis Theory, and the Cultivation theory). According to previous research and relevant theories, two research questions were raised. The first question sheds the light ...

This study describes the effects and effectiveness of explicit instruction of grammar on first year translation students’ writing skills enhancing transfer and hedging interference. First year translation students in a French-medium university in Lebanon study English, the target language, as both a means and an end. While communicative teaching methodologies look down upon and heavily criticize explicit instruction, students with French as their L2 have always felt safe given grammar rules, hoping to apply them right away. In order to increasing students’ metacognitive awareness, explicit ...
  • Trad, Zeina George (Notre Dame University-Louaize, 2007-05)
Reading is the basis of all activities students do in all school subjects and this skill has been given more attention than any other feature in education. Knowing how to read at school is an important accomplishment in itself for any student's language growth and is the source of success whether in academic years or later in life (DeStefano, 1982, p.388). Since to "read" is to decipher and understand the meaning of letters and symbols (Merriam Webster Online, p.!), comprehension is a key element in this skill. ESL/EFL students find reading in English difficult because they do not understand a ...
  • Khawand, Nicole (Notre Dame University-Louaize, 2020)
Feminist movements have been getting their voices heard in multiple countries, while NGOs and lobbyists are pressuring governments to legislate laws protecting women from sexual harassment and violent acts. However, multiple brands have decided to neglect the trend by swimming against the stream and keep on dehumanizing women using them as sexual objects and projecting violent images in their ads. Using the cultivation theory along with the social learning theory, this study aims to shed light on the normalization of sexism and violence against women in luxury brands’ ads addressing women and ...

Adults aged between 15 and 29 years old usually migrate from rural to urban areas because of the educational gap between their villages and the cites (CDR, 2016). This study examines the portrayal of this phenomenon of migration from urban to rural areas in televised series. It compares the empowerment that Carine Rizkallah, writer and lead woman character in “Albi Dak” series, demonstrated in the series to the lives of women in real life, and whether or not that empowerment portrays reality. In order to direct the thesis statement, this study conducts some research on a few subjects: Cultural ...
  • Abdulbaki, Nada H. (Notre Dame University-Louaize, 2014)
The focus of this study is basically exploring the concepts of advertising brainwash and the imagined reality, and how it has developed a gruesome threat that devours the children’s imagination. It also highlights how the Lebanese curriculum of Grades one to five ignores critical thinking that can be acquired by customized philosophy in the form of children stories, which in turn creates media literacy and equips kids to specify their own identities and shape their own world. Thus, the theoretical framework relies on mass communication theories: Propaganda (seven persuasive devices that convince ...

In recent years, terrorist attacks have become more widespread and spectacular. Thus, traditional news media must find a balance between ethics and the truth to better inform and protect the public from the harm that both sensationalist media coverage and terrorism might cause. But in reporting the destructive effects of terrorism, journalists should be careful not to appeal to emotions and not to present terrorists as heroes. This research shows that it is possible for the media to use codes of ethics to report the truth in the coverage of terror acts. It studies the coverage of three ...

In recent years, the food and beverage industry in Lebanon has viewed children and adolescents as a major market force. As a result, children and adolescents are now the target of intense and specialized food marketing and advertising efforts, especially fast food companies. The Lebanese society has witnessed an increase in overweight children and diabetic ones. This increase is due to several factors related to the types of food marketed to this category of people: - Food captures 12.5% of Lebanese consumer spending and so there is vigorous competition within this industry - Food is a repeat-purchase ...

The research paper aims to translate the first three chapters of the novel entitled Khirbet Masood and written by the contemporary novelist, Professor Mansour Eid (1944-2013), from Arabic to English. The translation process attempts to bridge both the Arabic and the English versions by rendering typically the same meaning knowing that the writer’s writing style is the “apparent ease” “السهل الممتنع” which is clear and flowing; nevertheless, it is inimitable. Moreover, this paper tackles the various difficulties the translator encountered during the translation process; these difficulties include ...

This study explores the representation of women in Nadine Labaki’s films: Caramel (2007), Where Do We Go Now (2011), and Capernaum (2018).
