This thesis argues that the process of the transformation of the image of the female in science fiction can be classified into pre-liminality, liminality, and post-liminal reintegration. These three stages lead towards hybridity and transition, but each is characterized by different directions and relations. To demonstrate this claim, each aspect of liminality (pre- and post-) will be examined through the lens of feminist theories as they are portrayed in Snow Crash (1992) by Neal Stephenson, Neuromancer (1984) by William Gibson, The Last Ride of the Glory Girls (2011) by Libba Bray, and Hand ...

Reading is the basis of all activities students do in all school subjects and this skill has been given more attention than any other feature in education. Knowing how to read at school is an important accomplishment in itself for any student's language growth and is the source of success whether in academic years or later in life (DeStefano, 1982, p.388). Since to "read" is to decipher and understand the meaning of letters and symbols (Merriam Webster Online, p.!), comprehension is a key element in this skill. ESL/EFL students find reading in English difficult because they do not understand a ...

The 19th Century witnessed a new era in Arabic Literature. After a long period of mental stagnation, a great desire for learning emerged. The West started to gain interest in Eastern Literature, which triggered closer relations between the Arab countries and other European nations. This approach paved the way for the Renaissance, which intended to achieve a drastic positive change. The East also started to appreciate Western Literature; this led to a reform in hope to limit ignorance. This openness to other civilizations sparked authors’ desires to bridge the gap between East and West. Gibran ...

This presentation showcases the journey that I embarked into within the media world. It is based on creating an overview of TV distribution history and analyzing changes in distribution to identify patterns throughout the years. This work was done by studying major formats in TV production as well as local and international production, TV shows, home-viewing and audience, and digital distribution. Every method of distribution and production affected shifts in audience expectations and changes in content, and every production was executed differently in each country. Based on academic ...

Municipalities are in direct contact with their communities, delivering basic services and ensuring safety and security within their jurisdiction, and they are at the forefront of the response to crises. While it is imperative to understand the potential of municipal communication in bridging the trust gap between the state and citizens to improve functionality and social stability, there is a dearth of such studies in Lebanon. This study becomes even more pertinent considering that it comes at a time when Lebanon is facing multiple crises including an unprecedented economic and ...

In light of the influence of fake news on the Lebanese revolution that was ignited on the 17th of October 2019, this research paper examines how Notre Dame University (NDU) students reacted, assessed and were affected by false information. Four focus groups were conducted with 24 NDU students from different faculties and majors to gather valuable results. To answer this study’s five questions and look deeper into the youth’s behavior, comprehension, and evaluation of fake news spread on social media, the researcher adopted the Uses and Gratifications Theory (UGT) developed by Katz in 1959. Lifelong learning is the process of assessing and recognizing one’s educational needs, with an intrinsically-driven purpose of continuously satisfying these needs, using proper tools. The process is deemed as crucial to medical education, by high medical authorities. Mobile learning, in medical education, offers a wide spectrum of benefits to students, educators, and the learning process in general, including the enhancement of lifelong learning and problem-based learning skills. In Lebanon, little research has been done on mobile learning in undergraduate medical education, with no existing ...

Nations have understood the importance of reliable branding strategies to promote themselves as unique touristic destination. Marketers around the world are now dealing with countries as if they are brands and use different kinds of strategies to promote them. This thesis went through the definition of branding and destination branding; it also discussed the branding process with the emphasis on the Lebanese case. Relying on persuasion theories, mainly Rank’s persuasion model, this thesis has analyzed the TV campaigns done by the Ministry of Tourism in Lebanon to determine their strengths and ...

Many studies revealed that teaching was an extremely stressful professional, and that teacher stress being emotional and/or physical was an increasing problem. Therefore, the study used a quantitative survey design to investigate the main sources of stress among Lebanese elementary school teachers, and to determine whether there was a relationship between elementary teachers’ stressors and emotion-focused coping and whether there was a relationship between elementary teachers’ stressors and problem-focused coping strategies. The study involved 30 teachers who worked in a private school in Keserwen, ...
  • Abdulbaki, Nada H. (Notre Dame University-Louaize, 2014)
The focus of this study is basically exploring the concepts of advertising brainwash and the imagined reality, and how it has developed a gruesome threat that devours the children’s imagination. It also highlights how the Lebanese curriculum of Grades one to five ignores critical thinking that can be acquired by customized philosophy in the form of children stories, which in turn creates media literacy and equips kids to specify their own identities and shape their own world. Thus, the theoretical framework relies on mass communication theories: Propaganda (seven persuasive devices that convince ...

The Lebanese leftist political song is an expression of a position and a belief, at times political and at others cultural. This study explores the reasons behind the emergence of the leftist political song. It analyzes more specifically the role of the Lebanese communist party and other leftist parties in supporting the artists that produced this type of songs and their role in using this particular genre as a motivator and a communication tool to mobilize their public. The study therefore examines the relationship between the political engagement of the artists and the existence of this song ...

During and after the war in Syria which erupted in 2011, the Syrian mobility has seen a rapid, large-scale outflow into neighboring countries with Lebanon being on the list of countries to host the largest numbers of Syrian refugees (SR). Many among them ended up living in refugee camps where conditions were and still are dire; consequently, they seek migration through refugees’ human agencies and foreign embassies in Lebanon. In light of this situation, community interpreting services have become increasingly required and immigration agencies subsequently have reached out to the Community ...

The research paper aims to translate the first three chapters of the novel entitled Khirbet Masood and written by the contemporary novelist, Professor Mansour Eid (1944-2013), from Arabic to English. The translation process attempts to bridge both the Arabic and the English versions by rendering typically the same meaning knowing that the writer’s writing style is the “apparent ease” “السهل الممتنع” which is clear and flowing; nevertheless, it is inimitable. Moreover, this paper tackles the various difficulties the translator encountered during the translation process; these difficulties include ...

This research has contributed to an increased knowledge of the difficult circumstances Iraq’s Christians are undergoing on the humanitarian, political, socio-economic and social levels, whether in their homeland or in diaspora. Ten years after the 2003 United States-led invasion of Iraq, Christians continue to be targeted by a wave of violence, threats, and intimidations executed by extremist Islamist military groups. They also face religious discrimination, political underrepresentation, and infringement of their fundamental rights. The main theoretical orientation of this study is based on the ...

Students tend to take a grade and rarely reflect on their performance. Did I do well? What was the main mistake? Is there anything I need help with? How can I improve that grade next time? That same grade that students get either motivates or demotivates them. If students get the chance to set their own goals based on their weakness, and work on an action plan to reach that goal, their view of the grade changes. They will take a grade as an indicator to help them know how well they have acquired a concept or even reached their goal. Based on that reflection, they will be able to know what the ...
