Cooperation with third states constitutes an important pillar of the EU’s migration policy. This study analyses to which extent the cooperation between the EU and its neighbouring countries had an impact on the protection of the rights of migrants and refugees in the respective countries. It gives a general overview of the state of the art of national migration policies and legislations in the Eastern and Western European neighbourhood and the Western Balkan states. .Three case studies on Georgia, Kosovo and Lebanon illustrate further the country specific situation of migrants and refugees ...

The prevalent approach to Open Educational Resources (OER) and Creative Commons (CC) in Lebanon during the last two decades has been a manifestation of the ‘Tragedy of the Commons’ in the digital sphere. The experience of the 2019 popular uprising (‘Thawra’) and ensuing 2020-2021 Covid 19 Lockdown, however, Covid 19 provide examples of an alternative ‘Governing the Commons’ in which users of shared goods and resources can transcend narrow self-interest and work for sustainable value management collectively. Using a contrapuntal approach, two intertwined storylines will be assessed, ...

These five open access factsheets were created following a unique ‘base-superstructure’ dialectical approach. They are useful when working with participants both in training settings, as well as in self-taught learning programs. The goal is to establish the political economy of both sectarianism and coexistence as the foundation for studying Lebanon through following a systematically rigorous approach and analyzing social phenomena and practices. These factsheets are open educational resources (OER) and are intended for awareness raising and as a foundation for further study. Therefore the ...

This report is based on media observation and monitoring executed by the Gender, Communication and Global Mobility Studies (GCGM) unit at the Faculty of Law and Political Science (FLPS) at Notre Dame University – Louaize (NDU). The monitoring and data collection took over two months from 1 July until 31 August 2021. The overall objective of this summary report is to understand and analyze qualitatively how news reports in Arabic digital media are portraying stories related to internal security including feature articles or opinion pieces related to keeping peace and stability within Lebanon, ...

This study is a first of its kind attempt to integrate the questions of gender and youth into the debate on good governance in the extractive industries sector in the Middle East. This intersectional and diversity management-based approach is already being applied to other sectors of society as we reach the end of the climactic year 2021. We see this research as a contribution to the improvement of the living conditions for everyone in our crisis-ridden part of the world. The main message of this study remains relevant in particular when it comes to good governance and policies even under ...

This essay explores some directions for future research of media coverage of male refugees, particularly from Syria. I link the narration of refugee stories to their mobility, their loss of home, belonging, possessions, people and social networks. However, these stories also entail the discovery of new territories and locations, of families in transition, of men whose ongoing mobility constantly impacts their ability or inability to take care of their loved ones and thus live up to the prescribed roles of men in the constructed conservative society from which they came.

Based on the concept of ‘affectedness’ (or ‘Betroffenheit’, Mies 1978), this article attempts to demonstrate how all participants in research, education, and social activism in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are impacted by the lack of a stable social environment, which is seen as the bedrock of scholarship by mainstream Northern theories and scientific methodologies. Researchers, academics and activists – as part of civil society – must deal with this intentional lack of security, social justice and freedom. In it we can recognize a form of elite-produced, and potentially indefinite, ...

This longitudinal survey provides an overview of 150 years of migration and labor policy in Austria, from the rule of Imperial Chancellor Klemens von Metternich to the country’s accession to the European Union in 1995. Taking the publication of the first in-depth analysis of Austrian labor migration policy in 1842 (Johann Vesque von Püttlingen, Die gesetzliche Behandlung der Ausländer in Österreich) as a point of departure, this study is based on a comprehensive overview of original national, regional, commercial, and labor union archives, as well as an exhaustive review of secondary literature ...

This article is based on a discussion of the scientific concept of ‘Subjectivity’ as proposed by Father George F. McLean, former head of the Council for Research in Values and Philosophy (CRVP) at Catholic University, Washington DC. The suggestions contained herein are derived from a Taufer understanding of the concept of the secular state and the "Diaspora Church" taken from the writings of Hans-Juergen Goertz, Paul Peachey, Ernst Troeltsch and John Howard Yoder. Furthermore, it demonstrates that, given an Abrahamic understanding of God, as well as a subjective approach to both state and church, ...
  • Sensenig, Eugene (Theological Review, 2016)
This chapter analyzes the contributions of the Taufer led ‘Radical Reformation’ to Muslim-Christian dialogue in the past and assess whether this historical example of “loving your neighbor as yourself,” and more pointedly “loving your enemy” and “turning the other check,” can play a role in the current situation in the Middle East. Dealing specifically with the former Benedictine monk and German Reformation leader Michael Sattler, it juxtaposes the Schwertler (sword-bearing) and the Stäbler (staff-bearing) responses to the existential threats emanating from the imminent Ottoman conquest and ...

This article deals with the disabilities-employment nexus. Based on an empirical survey of employability of women with disabilities in the Italian province of South Tyrol in 1993, it provides both significant scientific results on the topic, as well as dealing with the theoretical weaknesses and gaps in social science research at the time in Central Europe. At the end of the 20th century, studies on disabilities largely ignored issues related to gender and sexuality. Inversely, work done in the fields of women’s, men’s and gender studies rarely dealt with the problems facing the ‘handicapped’, ...
