Marine observatories based on sensor networks provide continuous ocean monitoring. The design phase of such systems, which is part of the complete development life cycle, is a complex and challenging task. The design difficulties may induce the designers to make architectural design errors during the design phase. This study aims to identify the best design approach that helps sensor networks designers in preventing errors and validating models at an early phase. In addition, it introduces a new environmental constraint that should be taken into consideration when building design models. To ...

Public authorities around the world have been historically responsible for the management of their municipal solid waste. The burden of this task has been increasing through the years considering the rapid expansion of urban cities and their corresponding populations along with a decline in land availability. The escalating figures in municipal solid waste generation increased the technical and financial challenges faced by local authorities, especially in developing countries. In the case of Lebanon, political conflicts and corruption, weak law enforcement and lack of planning in addition to ...

The current coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19) affected 218 territories around the world, infected more than 60 million people, and killed more than one million. It is expected that the number of cases will continue to increase unless a vaccine becomes available to all countries. However, the coronavirus outbreak is much more than a health crisis. This pandemic poses numerous challenges on different sectors and exacerbates existing inequalities. COVID-19 exposed major problems with our cities and highlighted their limited resilience. In an ever-more interconnected world (social, environmental, ...

School psychology appears to add credibility to the schooling and learning process of children. The profession of school psychology is relatively lesser known and appreciated. School psychologists’ main concern is the psychological, emotional, and social well-being of the students. The role of the school psychologists is very important, although very little research has been done on the perceptions, experiences, and challenges that school psychologists undergo in their profession in Lebanon. A phenomenological qualitative research is used in this study. The study is based on a set of interviews ...

Salt is one of the most used food additives not only to improve taste, but also for preservation and different functional properties. In recent years, there is a notable growing body of evidence demonstrating that salt is contaminated by extraneous substances such as microplastics. Many substances with adverse health effect such as heavy metal and endocrine disruptors can adhere to microplastics or enter as inherent part of the plastic end product. Plastics end up in body of water such as oceans and seas. This is the case in Lebanon where very little portion of plastics are recycled and the rest ...

Background: Exclusive breastfeeding rates in Lebanon during the first six months of life remain suboptimal. With more women in the workforce and inadequate paid maternity leave, families in Lebanon increasingly rely on child care in nurseries or daycare centers. Internationally, the extent to which daycare centers support and promote breastfeeding is one influencer of maternal decisions to (dis)continue breastfeeding. In Lebanon, little is known about which breastfeeding-related policies, if any, are implemented in daycare centers, as well as the caregivers’ level of knowledge and attitudes ...

Candida albicans, is usually a harmless fungus in healthy individuals, but life-threatening when found in large quantities or in inappropriate parts of the body. It developed resistance against the antifungal drugs fluconazole and amphotericin B, used in an abusive way, by adopting different mechanisms. Medicinal plants, which offer a wide variety of secondary metabolites, especially saponins, have been reported for their large biological activities. These phytochemicals are composed of a hydrophobic part (aglycone) and a hydrophilic one (glycone), which, based on their aglycone part, are ...

Soft skills have been the subject of much discussion and trending lately. Much research has been done on the relationship between partaking good soft skills and being a better employee. This could be especially true in the field of education, as the process of expectation and planning of the learning experiences showed to improve with the significant development of soft skills of the teachers. In Lebanon, very few studies are conducted on the role of soft skills in those entering the workforce. This research aims to bridge that gap by assessing the knowledge, perceptions, and behaviors of Lebanese ...

With the increase in the urban world population, the need for sustainable cities has become crucial, and comfortable and livable open spaces are an important aspect for this purpose. However, since open spaces are affected by the urban design of an area, their quality depends on the priorities of the stakeholders and decision makers, and thus might be compromised to the advantage of other needs, such as prioritizing profit over the public good. The thesis addresses comfort in open spaces, specifically within waterfront developments because many growing cities are coastal and thus, have witnessed ...

The twenty-first century cyberspace offers unprecedented opportunities for prosperity and development, but also a series of new and evolving threats to international peace, security, and human rights. For some years now, there have been sustained efforts from civil society groups across the world to harness the Internet for human rights causes. However, by publicizing human rights abuses in near-real time to mass audiences, the new uses of digital technologies may also challenge the legitimacy of the international legal order itself, especially if states are not able to action their legal ...

Cement is one of the most fundamentally used material all over the world. Among the many different properties of cement, compressive strength conventionally determined at the age of 28 days remains the most important parameter to assess cement quality. Waiting for 28 days to obtain a test result urges cement manufacturers to set quality parameters higher than the minimum accepted by norms, which means higher unnecessary manufacturing costs. The aim of this study is to assess the performance of cement mortar when nano silica (Nano-SiO2) is used as supplementary cementitious material (SCMs) and ...
